Planet.osm ist ein Schnappschuss der OpenStreetMap Datenbank.
Was enthält Planet.osm?
Planet.osm ist die jeweils neueste Version der Nodes, Ways, Relationen und Änderungssätze in der Datenbank, natürlich inklusive aller Tags. Frühere Versionen der Daten sowie GPS-Spuren sind nicht enthalten.
Planet.osm ist eine XML-Datei im .osm-Format.
Aktualisierung
Planet.osm wird wöchentlich (momentan jeden Donnerstagmorgen) veröffentlicht. Die Dateien sind seit Anfang April 2006 verfügbar. Die Dateigröße beträgt: (bzw. mit bzip2-Kompression)

Der wöchentliche Datenexport beginnt um ca. 01:10 GMT am Mittwoch. Alle vor diesem Zeitpunkt vorgenommenen Änderungen sind auf jeden Fall in der Datei enthalten. Allerdings sind nicht immmer alle referenzierten Objekte vorhanden. Der Export dauert im Normalfall ca. 12 Stunden.
Außerdem werden regelmäßige Diffs angeboten. Diese werden täglich erstellt (im Unterordner daily). Auch jede Stunde oder Minute aktualisierte Diffs sind vorhanden. Sie werden mit Osmosis generiert und können benutzt werden, um den gesamten Datensatz zu rekonstruieren (Beispiele unter Osmosis und osmupdate). Da in diesen Dateien nur die Unterschiede enthalten sind, sind sie sehr viel kleiner; ein komprimierter Tages-Diff ist normalerweise unter 50 MB groß. Herunterladen
Aufgrund der Dateigröße funktioniert das Herunterladen mit älteren Versionen von wget nicht mehr. Diese sind auf Dateigrößen unter 2 GB beschränkt, der Versuch, größere Dateien herunterzuladen, schlägt fehl.

Entpacken der Datei
Viele Programme können die komprimierte Datei verarbeiten. Falls das Entpacken dennoch nötig ist, kann unter Windows 7-zip verwendet werden. Unter Linux kann die Datei mit dem Befehl bzip2 -d planet.osm.bz2 entpackt werden. Ansonsten findet sich bei Wikipedia eine Liste mit Kompressionsprogrammen.
Falls die Kompression direkt über die libbzip2-Bibliothek gesteuert wird, beachte, dass die Datei mit pbzip2 komprimiert wurde und mehrere Ströme enthält, deren Verarbeitung im Kaptitel 3.4.8 der bzip2-Dokumentation beschrieben ist.
Entpacken während des Herunterladens
Während des Herunterladens ist die Netzwerkverbindung die Engstelle. Beim Entpacken der heruntergeladenen Datei ist es das Schreiben auf die Festplatte. Bei der Verarbeitung der komprimierten Datei ist es die CPU.
Falls ausreichend viel Platz zum Entpacken der Datei vorhanden ist (im Juli 2013 ca. 400 GiB), kann viel Zeit gespart werden, indem die Datei während des Herunterladens entpackt wird. Dazu wird der folgende Befehl verwendet:

Verarbeitung der Datei
Die Datei ist im OSM-XML-Format .osm. Im SVN sind einige Skripte verfügbar, u.a. um die Daten in eine Datenbank zu importieren.
- Osmosis ist ein Java-Programm, das eine Planet.osm-Datei in eine Datenbank importieren kann.
- planetosm-to-db.pl creates a current-ruby-server-database too (or a slightly different one for PostgreSQL, as used by Where Are They, including the db schema). It stores the node and segment ids in memory, so it can import only some of the data (exclude or include), and normally only uses about 100MB. It is not fast, taking several hours to load a UK-only planet excerpt.
- If you need a db for testing purposes only, http://richard.dev.openstreetmap.org/osm05.sql.gz is a 75Mb SQL dump of the UK from January 2008. (current_ tables only - but you can populate the other tables from there - and no relations tables.)
- (Other tools in svn have not been updated for the 0.5 database structure and are consequently not usable.)

Stuff done with planet.osm
- "OSM Aware" is an awareness tool transforming OSM diff. files in different KML versions which can be updated each day, hour and minute. Activity can be viewed in Google Earth, Google Maps, Open Layers and World Wind (see website for links and informations).

The java script does not require much memory and can process large planet.osm file very fast (< 8 minutes). You can use this script to create a smaller planet.osm file. A smaller planet.osm file may be useful for you if you want to import it to your local database server for local development as it will take less time to import and debug.
