The source of energy produced by a generator.

If the generator forms part of a power plant, this energy source should also be listed in the plant's plant:source=* tag.

Suggested values

Value Description
nuclear All generators converting nuclear power to another kind of energy. It can be either fission or fusion, according to generator:method=*
wind Generators using wind power to produce mechanical energy or electricity.
hydro Generator takes water input and produces mechanical energy or electricity
tidal Generators taking tidal water input on shores and producing mechanical energy or electricity
wave Generator converting wave energy into electricity
geothermal Generator converting heat from earth to steam or electricity.
solar Generator converting solar energy to heat or electricity
coal Generator burning coal for electricity/heat
gas Generator burning (natural) gas for electricity/heat
biomass Generator burning plant matter (e.g. wood pallets/chips) for electricity/heat
biofuel Generator burning plant based fuels for electricity/heat
biogas Generator burning biogas (from plants or sewage) for electricity/heat
oil Generator burning oil for electricity/heat
diesel Generator burning diesel for electricity/heat
gasoline Generator burning gasoline for electricity/heat
waste Generator burning waste/trash for electricity/heat

battery

Generator releasing energy previously stored in a battery

Take care when choosing the source. For example, a power generator that takes waste as its primary fuel, turns it into biogas and then burns the biogas should be tagged with generator:source=waste. If, however, this generator takes shipments of biogas that were processed from waste elsewhere (or from an other intermediate generator), then it should be tagged with generator:source=biogas.
