The parking key can be used together with amenity=parking to specify the type of parking facility.

On ways tagged with highway=*, the parking key can be used with side suffixes to specify parking along streets (parking:left=*, parking:right=* or parking:both=*). See the street parking page for more details about this.

Common values

Value Description Image Status
surface One level of parking on the ground. Approved
underground Underground parking. Approved
multi-storey Two or more levels of parking decks in a building structure. A common "parking garage" in the US. Prefer this tag to "parking=garage". Approved
rooftop One level of a parking deck on top of the building. In use
carports Structure used to offer limited protection to vehicles, primarily cars, from the elements (Carports on Wikipedia). Typically without walls. Approved
garage_boxes One level buildings with multiple individual boxes for one car, each, usually made of brick and metal. Usually, this area belong to garage cooperative with own name, chairman, budget, rules, security, etc. Approved
sheds Private hangars for vehicles, located close to owner's home. Often constructed of profiled metal. By contrast, a private garage usually has walls and a locking door, with room for 1–3 cars usually; for these use the tag building=garage instead. Approved

Street Parking
lane Parking on the street (which could be easily converted to a travel lane). Mostly used as a value for parking:left=*, parking:right=* or parking:both=* on a street tagged with highway=*. Approved
street_side Area suitable or designated for parking, which is directly adjacent to the carriageway of a road (but not on it) and can be reached directly from the roadway without having to use an access way. Approved
on_kerb Parking on the sidewalk. Mostly used as a value for parking:left=*, parking:right=* or parking:both=* on a street tagged with highway=*. Approved
half_on_kerb Parking partially on the sidewalk. Mostly used as a value for parking:left=*, parking:right=* or parking:both=* on a street tagged with highway=*. Approved
shoulder Parking on the shoulder, i.e. hard, paved or unpaved sections beside the road not normally meant to be driven on. Mostly used as a value for parking:left=*, parking:right=* or parking:both=* on a street tagged with highway=*. Approved
layby Parking at a lay-by (a term used predominantly on the British Isles) or rest area alongside a major road. A lay-by or rest-area is a facility, often rural, alongside a major road where motorists can take a break en-route to their destination In use
