Current Status

As of 1/1/2025, the state of public transportation in the MSP region does not reflect the current network status. A bulk of the data seemed to be uploaded from a static Metro Council GIS dataset published in 2019. Since that import, the network has changed significantly. Mapped routes and stops have been moved or no longer exist and new routes and stops have been added to the network.

Because of the size of this project, it is important to stay organized. Further, because the network constantly evolves, I will attempt to develop and describe a process in this page that will allow for relatively quick updates of the existing data. This is particularly important because the network is set to change significantly by 2027 under Metro Transit's Network Now plan.

Data Source

Metro Transit, the Metropolitan Council, Maple Grove Transit, Plymouth Metrolink, SouthWest Transit, the University of Minnesota, and the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) publish their GTFS data here:

This zip file contains thirteen text files with relevant information on bus stops, routes and lines.

MVTA publishes their GTFS data separately. If this project is completed successfully, a separate project will be set up to update MVTA data.

Tagging Stops

  1. Generate a CSV file of the GTFS data for a single route. This file should contain at minimum latitude, longitude, stop name, stop id. (This is not a trivial task - it required me to create a relational database in order to generate a list of stops for a given route.)
  2. Import the CSV generated into JOSM. This is the "Reference" layer.
  3. Download OSM bus stops into a new JOSM layer. This is the "Subject" layer.
  4. Edit Reference nodes
    1. highway=bus_stop
    2. public_transport=platform
    3. set stop_id to ref
    4. set stop_name to name
    5. remove any unused tags
  5. The conflation plug-in is going to do the heavy lifting with this task. Install it if necessary.
  6. In the conflation plug-in, set the appropriate reference and subject data. Be sure to include many more of the subject data points than necessary, just to make sure all appropriate data is included. Click "Generate Matches"
  7. Go through the "Reference Only" stops and confirm that there are no Subject stops that the conflation missed. Select those stops and merge them to the Subject layer.
  8. Re-run conflation.
  9. Go through the matches, starting with the worst. Those are often stops that don't actually match.
    1. If there is no true match, add the Reference stop to the Subject layer. Check to see if the Subject stop still exists using the metro transit Stops and Stations page: https://www.metrotransit.org/stops-stations. If it no longer exists, delete from the Subject layer.
    2. If there is a match, use the conflation plug in to set the name of the stop using the Subject layer name and make sure that the "ref" number is correct.
  10. After going through all of the stops, select all of the stops in the Subject layer and edit the tags to follow the below convention:
    1. bus=yes
    2. highway=bus_stop
    3. name=XXX
    4. network=Metro Transit (or other)
    5. network:wikidata=Q3307442 (or other)
    6. operator=Metro Transit (or other)
    7. operator:wikidata=Q3307442 (or other)

Tagging Routes

How to get the correct ways for the up to date routes:

  1. Get nodes from the shape file in the GTFS data.
  2. Draw a rough outline of the route way, connecting the nodes from above.
  3. Hit "J" to move the way to all nodes.
  4. Select the way nodes from the existing transit route and merge them to the reference layer.
  5. Select the reference way and all of the merged nodes and hit "J".
  6. Select the reference way and click "select way nodes"
  7. Add the reference way and click "P"
  8. Now this reference way can be used for a conflation with existing route


Stops

  1. open CSV file of the stops for the route.
  2. Perform conflation with the csv and all bus stops
  3. select matched bus stops and include them in the route relationship.
