De term gratis materiaal is waarnaar u informeel zou kunnen verwijzen als "open". Een project dat zijn bouwstenen - of dat nu software, algoritmes of kunstwerken zijn - voor iedereen tot een bepaalde mate beschikbaar stelt om het te dupliceren zou moeten worden gelabeld met "ja", en een project waar relevante delen - scripts voor gegevensverwerking, stylesheets voor renderen, of CSS-bestanden - zijn verborgen in een zwarte doos zouden moeten worden gelabeld als "nee".
