OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a collaborative project to create a free editable map of the world. The geodata underlying the map is considered the primary output of the project. The creation and growth of OSM has been motivated by restrictions on use or availability of map data across much of the world, and the advent of inexpensive portable satellite navigation devices. OSM Kerala and OSM India communities are actively functioning.

During 2019 around 100 NSS programme Officers (PO) were trained with the help of IT mission and during four weeks in March-April 2020 regional meetings were conducted using Zoom application for NSS PO's and training sessions using Zoom were conducted for volunteers from various regionals. All these meetings were found very effective for creating awareness about OSM. 14 colleges were identified as training centers for geo tagging and PO's from these institutions are well trained to conduct training sessions. During May 2020, 5 days internships were provided to 1100 students from the University in the area of geo mapping using OSM. Even after all these efforts the number of students who are aware about the OSM is only a fraction of student strength of the University.
